Lesson 1: Simple Still Lifes

Drawing Lesson 1
Simple Still Lifes

Time:  1-2  classes | Supplies:  Paper, pencil, and eraser, subject to draw | Utah Std:7-8.V.C.1

Students Will Be Able To

  • Learn how to sketch what they see
  • Work through mistakes made during sketching
  • Understand that sketching is made from lines, circles, and other shapes
  • Understand that at this point this is just the layout of the idea on paper.

Assignment Directions

  • Sketch: Students will choose a subject that they would like to draw and create a sketch on paper using a pencil.
  • Size: Advice students to use a good amount of space on the paper, but to make sure their drawing doesn't look like it is crammed on paper.
  • Lines and Shapes: Have students use lines and shapes to create the forms they see. Let them know to not worry about getting everything correct the first time. Sketching is to get the idea down on paper.
  • Light and Shadow:  Make sure students are looking at the light and shadows laying on the subject they draw. Light and Shadow will make their drawing look 3-dimensional.
  • Build Up: Students should continue to build up their sketches by defining and refining their lines and shapes.
  • The Whole Picture: Students should work on the whole picture instead of finishing one part before moving on.

Tips

  • Using different types of pencils will make it easier to create darker or softer colors. When you draw try having 1-3 different pencils such as 2H, 4B and 6B. If you only have 1 pencil to work with, then apply a little more pressure and more layers in areas you darker. Less pressure and less layers in areas supposed to be softer.
